ASTM D1708-13 Tensile Properties of Plastics by Use of Microtensile Specimens
ASTM D1708-13 covers the determination of comparative tensile strength and elongation properties of plastics in the microtensile form. This method can be used for specimens with thickness up to 3.2 mm, including films. Performing this test method is used for comparative data, however this test method cannot be used for determination of modulus of elasticity. When measuring the modulus of elasticity, refer to ASTM D638 for rigid plastics or ASTM D882 for thin plastic sheeting.
Typically, a 3340 Series single column machine with Bluehill® Universal is used for testing according to ASTM D1708.
The challenges of testing to this standard:
- Specimen gripping
- Jaw face selection
Our solutions:
- Specimen gripping – When testing such small specimens, pivoting can occur in the jaw faces, leading to slippage throughout the testing. The 2712-05x Series miniature pneumatic grips enable a continuous clamping force throughout the test to account for any thinning of the material. For a manual solution, we recommend miniature wedge action grips.
- Jaw face selection – Rigid microtensile specimens typically require a serrated jaw face, however, this may result in premature failure when testing a more delicate specimen. The 2712-05x Series miniature pneumatic grips have a quick-change jaw face design, which allows users to easily change between a serrated jaw face for rigid specimens, and a rubber-coated face for more delicate materials.
We recommend reading and reviewing ASTM D1708-13 in order to fully understand the test setup, procedures, and results requirements.
